On the morning of October 28, 2026, Ms. Nguyen Hai Yen conducted a Grade 8 Natural Sciences demonstration lesson in Class 8A7 on Lesson 4: Solutions and Concentration (Period 3). The lesson featured several innovative teaching approaches, particularly bilingual instruction in English and Vietnamese, combined with hands-on experiments and technology-supported exploration.
Physiological saline solution (0.9%), hydrogen peroxide solution (30%)… These familiar figures on everyday products became the starting point for the lesson. Drawing on situations from daily life, the teacher sparked students’ curiosity and guided them in exploring two questions: What is solution concentration? How can it be calculated? Product presentations in English, engaging chemistry experiments, and illustrative videos created an exciting and engaging warm-up.
During the exploration stage, students worked in groups, analysed data, and completed worksheets in English to derive the formulas for calculating solution concentration, including percentage concentration and molar concentration. They then applied these formulas to specific examples.
In particular, using PhET interactive simulations, students directly adjusted the amounts of solute and solvent and observed the resulting changes in the solution. These visual, interactive experiences enabled them to test their understanding and gain a deeper grasp of the underlying concepts, rather than simply memorising formulas mechanically.
During the practice stage, the groups tackled further real-world problems presented in English. Reading and understanding the questions, discussing scientific terminology, and applying formulas helped students consolidate their Natural Sciences knowledge while giving them opportunities to use English in a specific subject area.
The Natural Sciences demonstration lesson took place in a lively atmosphere, with students actively engaging with new knowledge and enthusiastically participating in practical activities and answering questions. Through the lesson, teachers at the school gained valuable insights into designing practical lessons that develop students’ competencies and integrate English, AI, and science. The lesson also made a positive contribution to lesson study-based professional development at Giang Bien Secondary School.
